Writers & Readers (And a 5 Star Book Review)

Hi everyone! Happy fall! I hope you are doing awesome. 🙂

I’ve taken a few weeks off from writing to spend some major time reading. I had 4 books I wanted to finish so I used all of October to wrap those up.

When I first started writing I did not realize what a huge role reading plays in learning how to write well. This last month, I studied sentence structure, tone, and writing personality. I read all 4 books with the intent to learn from these authors.

I want to share with you one of the books that knocked my socks off!

“Blue Like Jazz” by Donald Miller.

For the past year I’ve been listening to Donald Miller’s Podcast, “Building A Story Brand.” I love listening to him every week. I think he’s a genius. He teaches on how to “clarify your message” as a writer, entrepreneur, in ministry, etc. He believes that all success is due to focus and clarity. In a world full of distractions, his advice has been so helpful to me!

I can’t believe after all these years I’ve never read his most famous book. In a way, though, I’m glad I hadn’t read it until now because I don’t think it would have impacted me greater than it did in this exact season of my life.

I give “Blue Like Jazz” 5 stars!

Donald Miller’s writing style is exactly how I aspire to write. Short, a bit choppy, heavy hitting yet at the same time funny and surprisingly easy.

I love memoirs. And I love coming of age stories. This is the perfect blend of both.

In this book, we journey alongside Donald as he discovers a reoccurring theme in his life- selfishness. The topic sounds intense but I promise it’s one of the most enjoyable books I’ve ever read.

“Blue Like Jazz” touched me a on a very deep level. At any other time, I don’t think it would have moved me as much as it did this month.

If you’re looking for a book thats both quirky and thoughtful- I highly recommend it. It will make you cry, make you laugh, make you think…but mostly at the end it will leave you totally in awe of God’s pursuit for His children. I was amazed at how much God spoke to me through this book. I know he would do the exact same for you.

So…with all this reading under my belt, I look forward to writing more in the coming weeks!

//Lord, thank you for each person reading this post. I’m so thankful for them!
