The Beginner’s Guide to Prayer

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Did you know that you can talk to God? Like literally speak to the creator of the world? And did you know that God can talk back?

“Whoa, whoa, whoa… hang on a minute. You’re telling me that I can actually correspond with God?”

Yes, that is exactly what I’m saying! 🙂

Let me share with you something that took me way too long to figure out on my own. Jesus wants to have a personal relationship with you. He wants a deep connection, friendship, and a rooted bond with you. You might be wondering how something like this is even possible? We can’t see God. We can’t touch God. How on earth are we supposed to talk to Him? Well, the answer is a lot more simple than we give it credit. The answer is prayer!

The bible teaches us a great deal about prayer. There is actually a section of Scripture where Jesus himself teaches us how to pray! I’m sure you’re familiar with this part of the bible. It’s most affectionally referred to as “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Our Father, in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

The bible also teaches us that we should “pray without ceasing,” “pray privately to the Lord,” and “wake up in a state of prayer.”

God loves it when we talk to Him! (Feel free to click on the links above to read the verses I’m referring to!)

The Beginner’s Guide to Prayer

How to go from praying sometimes to praying always

I want to encourage you to just start talking to God. Talk to him about anything and everything. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we think prayer has to be. It doesn’t have to be only before you eat a meal or right as you go to bed. It doesn’t have to happen only when you’re in crisis or when someone asks you to pray for them. You can talk to God about your fears. You can thank Him for your day so far. You can ask Him a question! The sky is the limit because God loves to talk to you and He cares about every single thing you care about.

Over the years I have focused on making prayer part of my everyday life. With God’s help He has reminded me the importance of talking with Him all day long instead of just reaching out when I desperately need something. Over time, it has become a habit and conversing with Him is completely natural now. Most days I start talking with Him right when I wake up. I pray as I fold laundry, drive to work, and cook dinner. I also make sure that I’m taking the time to listen to His response. I don’t want to be quick to pray and slow to listen. Conversation with God is two ways. Growing a friendship takes time. I always want to make sure that I ask Him to show me what He wants me to know through His Word. I also listen to the Holy Spirit who puts things on my heart throughout the day. God can talk to us in many forms- sometimes in a still small voice, through other people but most commonly through His Word. It really is amazing to experience a friendship with God!

I’ve realized the coolest thing since I started praying always instead of praying sometimes. I’ve seen that the more I talk to God about the small things throughout my day the less inclined I am to worry when problems arise. By being in a constant state of communication with God I trust Him faster and worry less.

My encouragement to you today is to push prayer beyond Sunday morning church and start connecting with God in your everyday life. Give it a try!

// God, teach us today how to develop a prayer lifestyle. Remind us to have daily conversation with you about all things big and small. Thank you that you love to hear from us! Make us into women who crave to pray.

Yes, He speaks to us most commonly through His Word. So thankful to have the privilege to read His Word as often as I want as it is food for my soul. Thank you for the encouragement and reminder to pray without ceasing. To talk with our Father often throughout the day. It will strengthen us plus we'll learn what the sound of His voice is and be quick to respond when we recognize it! Blessings to you, Kiva!
