/ Seasons /
Life is filled with many different seasons. Difficult, peaceful, stretching, strengthening, exciting, waiting…the list goes on!
The other day it was super windy where I live- trees swaying strongly, leaves flying everywhere. I was in a parking lot waiting for a friend so I decided to roll down my car window and enjoy the breeze while I waited for her.
Then suddenly something caught my eye. As I looked out I saw this huge bird in the distance. It was flying in a circular motion with no effort at all, it wasn’t even flapping it’s wings! The wind was completely carrying and directing the bird. And he was loving the ride!
I watched him go around and around for a long time then suddenly the wind stopped- As fast as wind had ever stopped before! There wasn’t a single gust blowing and without the wind the sun became scorching hot! I decided to roll up my window and use the glass as a shield to protect me from the heat. I got distracted from the sudden temperature shift and lost sight of the bird for a second. When I looked back I saw something absolutely incredible. This bird had gone from gliding through the air with ease to a wing motion that was fighting for its life not to fall out of the sky! I grabbed a pen and paper in my car right then and wrote the words, “FLAP HARD!”
I feel like this bird was a simple message from God to me. I believe He was reminding me that there will be seasons of rest and seasons of work. Seasons of ease and seasons of pain. One day you’re coasting comfortably and the next you’re flapping as if your life depended on it. 🙂 To prove this point, the bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”
That bird was blindsided by the stopping wind, but that didn’t make him fall. The best part of this simple story is the end. Only 2 minutes later the wind started roaring again! You better believe he got right in the wind pocket and let the gusts carry him along!
To me, it was an awesome display of God’s purpose in seasons. And how seasons never last forever.
When you’re in a period of coasting, remember that it is a gift from God to strengthen and restore you to one day fight again. If you are in a season of flapping hard, remember that God will always come back to rescue you and carry you through.
// Today Lord, we thank you for seasons. You are the only thing that lasts forever. Your love isn’t a season. Your grace isn’t a season. Your forgiveness isn’t a season. Those things are eternal and we are so thankful for that. Remind us of that truth when we are in a period of “flapping hard.” Give us strength to keep flying!
