Heart / Thoughts / Words: Part 2

HTW2

The expression, “A kid’s mind is like a sponge,” is lasting way beyond childhood for me.

I must be an auditory learner- because I remember what people say, song lyrics, and lines from movies very easily! If something enters my brain, it tends to get stuck awhile! 🙂

This is one of the main reasons I am so passionate about filling my mind with God’s word. I have realized that if I don’t occupy it with truth it will get distracted with anxiety! Our culture is set up this way- constantly wanting our attention, shouting, “Look over here!” and “Listen to me!” And the funny thing is, most of what it wants us to pay attention to is either unimportant or upsetting.

I do not believe it is a good idea to stick our heads in the sand and escape reality altogether, but the bible says there is so much freedom when we focus on things that are “true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy.” (Philippians 4:8) This means that if we hear or see something that isn’t mentioned in the list above, we should not spend too much time thinking about it. If we hear bad news, we should pray about it instead of worrying about it. If we see something disturbing we shouldn’t replay it over and over in our heads. We can bring it to God and ask Him to help us move forward.

Recently I have been filtering what I intentionally allow myself to listen to and watch. I do this because I’ve realized there is a direct correlation between my mood/ attitude/ thoughts/ and feelings when I watch certain movies, TV and listen to types of music. Since my mind absorbs it all- I want to make sure what I’m letting sink in, is God’s best.

Can anyone relate? Do your attitudes and thoughts change based on what you watch or listen to? I believe it is so good for us to deeply know ourselves and understand the root causes for our behavior. And for me, I know that my mind turns to anxiety when I watch or listen to subjects that make me anxious.

God’s an awesome God. And I’m so thankful He shows me new things about myself all the time. I pray He is doing the same thing in your life, too!

// Lord, thank you for reminding us to focus on Your goodness and our many blessings. Continue to purify our hearts and make us crave Your best!
