The Happy Week :) Enjoying Your Favorite Friendships
This week we’ve been looking at a few ways God brings us happiness! We talked about focusing on positive memories and our “God moments” as well as establishing daily Quiet Time with God. Today I want to talk about one of the main ways I feel joy in my life- through friendships!
Like most people this past January, I made several New Years Resolutions. It was a short list including 3 different categories: Spiritual, Relational, and Personal. Under each heading I wrote a few things I wanted to work on this year with God’s help. Under the “Relational” category I wrote down this: “Pray over and invest in my deep, life-giving, favorite friendships.” The first friend I want to make sure I’m doing this with is Jesus.
There is something so powerful about knowing someone and being known. In 1 Corinthians 8:3 and 13:12 the bible says that God knows us. It says that we are “clearly known,” and “fully understood” by Him! There was a period in my life where I felt very misunderstood by people. But during that difficult time, I recalled those scriptures and held tightly to the fact that God “gets me.” He is my most important friend and investing in our relationship brings me so much happiness.
In addition to God, and of course my husband, (my second most important and favorite friend) I believe we should pursue our other God given friendships! I wrote in my New Years Resolution that I wanted to “Pray over and invest in my deep, life-giving, favorite friendships.” To me, this means to spend time with the women in my life who fill me with joy! If you’re at a place in your life where you feel like you don’t have many of these types of friendships- pray for God to give them to you! I completely believe God will answer your prayer if you ask Him!
Life-giving friendships are so important! Don’t neglect them by being “too busy.” It will be worth every second if you spend regular quality time with women who lift you up, encourage you, and inspire you. Your heart deserves to have friends who love you and support you. Proverbs 17:17 says that our favorite friendships should be with people who, “Love you at all times!” These are the friends who stick with you when you’re going through a hard season in life. They hang in there with you and pray for you. The verse goes on to say that “A brother (we will say “sister”) is born for adversity.”
Let’s be this kind of woman! Let’s be there for the friends He’s placed in our life. Let’s encourage them, get coffee with them, and be a shoulder to cry on. God wants us to learn how to be this kind of friend, and in turn I know He will bless us with these friendships!
// Lord, I want to pray for every woman reading this. Fill our lives with deep, life-giving friendships. Strengthen our existing friendships and even bring new ones into our lives. Most importantly God, help us to be the kind of women who love at all times. Thank you for filling us with your joy through the friends you’ve given us!
