Salt

salt

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.” Matthew 5:13

Good afternoon everyone! This week I was studying this section of Matthew 5 and was really focusing on the desire God has for us to be “salty people.” 🙂
Jesus says that we are “the salt of the earth.”
But to understand it spiritually, lets first think about it literally. In food, when that “one thing” is lacking, salt is added.
God wants us to be like salt to the people He’s placed in our lives. Just like how salt brings out the flavor and depth of the food, God wants us to bring out the best in people.

God wants us to be so good to everyone that they thirst for our “saltness.” To put a word to the biblical term of salt- lets call it love. In Colossians 4:6 Paul encourages the Christians around him to, “Say everything with grace and season it with salt.” What he’s saying here is, “season what you say with love.”

In a culture driven by harsh and blunt people – let’s be the opposite. Lets focus on being the “salt of the earth” by loving on people! Let’s encourage them and sprinkle God’s love on their lives. An awesome verse to show God’s passion for us to be good to others is Galatians 6:10. It says, “So then, as occasion and opportunity open up to us, let us do good to all people, not only being useful or profitable to them, but also doing what is for their spiritual good and advantage. Be mindful to be a blessing, especially to those of the household of faith (those who belong to God’s family with you, the believers).

Lets be like salt to those around us and add love to their lives. God’s just waiting for Christians to be mindful to be a blessing to others. He wants us to be good to people on purpose. God said that He’s placed us here to be salt- to spread His love everywhere we go. He longs for us to bring out greatness in others so they thirst for Him – He is the Living Water.

// Good afternoon Lord, help us to be mindful to be a blessing to others. Remind us the amazing calling you’ve put on each of our lives- to be the salt of the earth. Holy Spirit, prompt us to add love and goodness to everyone we’re with… so they thirst for You. We love you God! We know you’re going to give us the opportunity and confidence to live this kind of life!
